Switching up the homepage

The challenge

Our payout license partner had given us a deadline of 31st October 2024 to wrap up the use of billing cards within the product and we had a bunch of new features to role out.

The product’s homepage had to be switched up to accommodate the changes.

Analysis and strategy

The most obvious competitor was Lemfi as they hold the market share in this fintech-type space but in terms of pure UI and inspired UX i looked at Zing, CRED, Revoult and Monese, thanks to Mobbins it was a pretty straightforward research.

The strategy: design a bunch of screens and conduct usability tests.

Iteration 1

Thought process

This iteration was heavily inspired by Zing and Monese, I felt like giving the users the ability to switch between wallet and card was a good idea. I was wrong.

User issues

“This makes me feel like Velox payments issues cards”

“It feels weird”

“Stock images within the app feels unrighteous”

Challenges observed

The card feature had to communicated in a way that user knew that it wasn’t Velox payments issuing the card.

The UI had to be improved.

Iteration 2

Thought process

This took a different direction from what i had been doing, i opted for something more modern and refined, using colors where i wanted to draw user attention and other things to keep things fresh.

User issues

“It could be better”(Product manager)

“Shouldn’t the news banner be before the transaction history?”

“Ooou this looks way different, i like it!”

Challenges observed

The UI had definitely improved but it seemed like more pressure was put on me to improve it...maybe reduce taps to get to wallet?.

Separate the transactions from the action.

Great progress....next

Iteration 3

Thought process

We phased out billing cards which changed somethings especially on the settings page but that’s okay; these screens where presented to the stakeholders and some users...(you’ve already met the PM)

User issues

We’re getting somewhere”(Product manager)

“The swap needs to be put out there, the recurring transactions as well”(Stakeholder)

“I like how this looks but grey feels weird”

Challenges observed

The business side of things had been neglected by me, so i had to bring some more features.

Cleaner UI?.

Iteration 4

Thought process

People kept complaining about the billing card so i decided to take a different approach and make a “source account” type of thing and make the wallet shine.

And i changed the padding to see if it would improve the UI...i think it did.

User issues

No issues

Impact

This redesign caused a bit of confusion for users as they were taken aback by the complete change, so we had to to a walkthrough after that we recorded a 12% increase in user satisfaction.

Conclusion

This was a fun project, the iterations, the feedback, watching the design transform, I look forward to updating this case study in time.
